Simple, Cranberry Relish (or Jam)

This is my last post until after the Holiday. I will still be reading blogs, and I will check in and comment anyone who leaves me a comment. This is a simple, but delicious Cranberry Relish that I've been making with my children for a few years. The recipe is for Relish, and traditionally, it wasn't supposed to be cooked, but it tastes better that way. I call it Cranberry Jam now. Here is what you need: Fresh Cranberries, Walnuts & 2 Oranges Chop up the Cranberries and Oranges, measure one cup of Walnuts. Pour it all into a pot. Add two cups of Sugar and 1 & 1/2 cups of water. Stir Boil, then simmer. Until it looks like this: Tastes great! Thumbs up mommy! We put some in jars to give to their Grandmas and keep the rest for us. Tastes delicious with Turkey! This is a traditional Cranberry Sauce. If you have made this before, what do you do to jazz up your recipe?

Shopping for a (Good) Winter Coat

I've been in Philly for years and I still can't get over how cold it gets in the winter. N.E. winters are no joke. I'm trying to find a coat that will keep me really warm this winter. So here's what I've found so far: The Belted Wool Coat from Express $108.00. I like the style, but I also like the high collar, that would really keep me warm on windy days. The downside is that it comes in Ivory. I could see my 3-year-old getting sticky candy cane hands on this while we're out. This is the Long Velvet Tie Polyfill from XOXO for $98.00. I love everything about this coat, I just wish there were more color choices, it only comes in black. This Plaid Drop Waist from Baby Phat is cute, but I don't think it would keep me warm. I would buy this if I lived some where down south, like Georgia. Winters weren't too bad when I was there. The Price for this coat: $179.00. This coat I simply loved. This is the Logo Belted Jacket from The House of Dereon. It costs $238.0

It's Been Awhile

It's been a while since I've posted a blog. I'm sure all of my readers have noticed that I've been making some big changes to my blog. I'm not quite done yet. Anyway, I've been considering getting a part time job to make some extra money for Christmas. Only thing is, I already work from 9am-5:30p, so that means I would have to work from 6:30pm-midnight if I were to pick up a second job. Or worse than that, I would have to work weekends. I don't know how this will work out, but I'll be job searching over the next few days. I can't help feeling like this economic crisis is ruining my Holiday spirit. Thumbs down to our shitty economy

Dx'd @ 4: Journey of a Type 1 Diabetic

Young Voices Video: Through November 1st, Discovery Health was accepting video submissions for Young Voices: Life with Diabetes Call to Action. My daughter and I put together a short video (it had to be 60 seconds or less). We did all this work only to find out that our file was too large to be uploaded. That was fixable, but then I realized after reading further, that they were looking for teens and adolescents. Anyway, here is the video we put together: I don't know if it will be posted on Discovery Health's Site. They are selecting certain videos to be voted on.

We Can Fly

Yesterday, my daughter brought home a coloring page of Barack Obama with the following on the back: Crispus Attucks fell so that Rosa Parks could sit. Rosa Parks sat, so that Dr. Martin Luther King could march. Dr. Martin Luther King marched, so that Barack Obama could run, and Barack Obama ran, so that we can fly. It brought a smile to my face.

I Got Tagged

I got tagged yesterday by PromoMama , owner of two geat blogs, Promo Mama and How Does Mama Look? I now have to share 7 random things about myself. Here I go: 1. I'm supposed to be engaged but I still have doubts. 2. I had my first child when I was 15. 3. I can't keep up with the new music anymore. Everytime I turn around my daughter's singing something new. 4. I just saw the Temptations movie for the first time last week. (Where have I been? It was a really good movie). 5. I can watch Law & Order SVU re-runs over and over no matter how many times I've seen them. 6. I spend way too much time on the internet. 7. I take my One-A-Day multi vitamin more than once a day. Now it is my turn to tag! http://urbanreformnetwork.blogspot.com http://expand-yourmusichorizon.blogspot.com http://eskimodarryl.blogspot.com http://thirtyhood.blogspot.com http://anna-lorraine.blogspot.com/

This Means so Much to me, as a Black Mother

Since I heard the words, "Barack Obama will be our 44th President," I have been going through a tidal wave of emotions. At first I screamed and yelled to express how extremely happy I was. The morning after, I was pretty quiet. I was pretty much speechless the whole day as I tried to take in the events from the night before. Yesterday, I sat teary eyed as I thought about how hard Obama fought for this and how hard many African Americans fought for all of us through history. This is truly a remarkable time in history for us as a people. I am so proud of Barack Obama and his beautiful family. I am grateful for people like him, people like Dr. King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. When I was younger, my father often told me, that I could be anything I wanted to be when I grew up. He told me that being black and being a woman wouldn't stop me from doing anything that I was really passionate about. However, I remember having a different history book in each grade and

A Blog About Blogging: Label Clouds

Wordpress blogs come with a Label Cloud, instead of the long list of Labels that we have on our Blogger sites. I've found the code and directions for getting one of these nifty little subject boxes, but wouldn't it be nice if Blogger just gave it to us? (By nice I mean simple and less time consuming).

Phillies Phever Drives Phans Insane

Why, oh why can't the citizens of our city celebrate without acting completely insane? We won the World Series and you'd think it would be a time to lift the city and praise. Instead, last night people rioted and destroyed the city. Doing everything from having fire riots, to breaking store windows, almost knocking over statues, looting, dumping over the metal trashcans in center city, turning over the big ceramic pots, trying to turn over a school bus, throwing glass bottles at police officers, tearing up street signs and spray painting them. I'm surprised that only two police officers were hurt. This is supposed to be a good thing, so why are people breaking things and destroying the city? You're supposed to break things when you're angry, not when your happy. Get it together people. This is costing the city money. Businesses can't open because they have to clean their stores and get the windows fixed. This is ridiculous. Here's a photo of the fire. It do

What was that? Did you say, World Series Champions?

Yeah baby!!!!! I would now like to dedicate this song to the Rays: Thumbs up to the Phillies for being the best baseball team out there and for giving us a wonderful baseball season!

A Blog About Blogging -Someone Please Notice Me!

I've been spending some time joining social networks for Bloggers and checking out other blogs. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of people have a theme for their blog. The other thing that they have, that my blog doesn't have, is a header. I've seen so many pretty header images and catchy Blog titles. I'm wondering, "Is my blog missing something?" I chose not to use a header because I think it will clash with all the colors on my page and make everything look too busy. I chose not to stick to one theme because I have a million things to say and they come in a variety of different topics. I haven't been getting a lot of comments. So, I'm not sure if it has to do with the layout of my blog, or something else like that. I read somewhere online that for every 100 people that view your blog only 10 will comment. I can say that the social networks have paid off. Most of the comments that I received came from people who are members of those networks.

Benadryl can fix it!

My mom seems to think Benadryl is the solution for everything. I hear things from her all the time like, "Her skin was itching so I gave her Benadryl." "He had a bump, it looked bad so I gave him some Benadryl." "Yeah, your daughter ate some crabs and her throat was itching, so I thought it might be an allergic reaction and I gave her Benadryl." "He fell of his bike and the scar had dirt on it so I gave him Benadryl, just in case he was allergic to the dust or something like it." Today she called me and said, "The kids are saying they're itching all over, I'm going to go buy some more Benadryl. It might be an allergic reaction to the detergent or something." I had to flat out tell her,"Don't give my kids anymore Benadryl!" She is driving me crazy with this. I don't know if they like how Benadryl tastes or what. What I do know, is that all of them were not having itchy skin at the same time and if they were, it

$56. dress makes Michelle Obama an elitist.

Last night on Larry King Live Georgette Mostbacher really pissed me off when she called Michelle Obama an elitist, because she wore a $56.00 dress designed by Maria Pinto when she was on "The View." Here's a video of Mostbacher, making an ass of herself on Larry King. First, it just sounded stupid. Second, she said Maria Pinto works by appointment only, as if you can't buy her clothes without setting an appointment and having her personally design them. Her clothes are available for purchase at Saks Fifth Avenue. The same place where Sarah Palin's clothes which purchased from. Also, let me just say, I don't see a problem with Palin spending $150,000 on clothes for herself and her children. Americans are big on image. No matter how many people want to deny it, if Palin would have went to the RNC with JC Penny clothes on, someone would have had some type of criticism for that too. Besides, this is nothing compared to Cindy McCain's $300,000 outfit that she w

Quick Update: JDRF Walk for the Cure

The walk is this Sunday. We've received some donations, but we didn't get as much as I had hoped. I'll blame it on the failing economy. We are doing this for Shalonda and all of the other Diabetic children out there. So I told the kids that as long as we do our best and go out there any show our support, we' will still have made a great contribution. Everyone seems pretty excited about our first year participating in the walk, except for my oldest daughter. Miss Twelve-year-old herself, says she doesn't want to walk that far and she hates walking. She's such a sour puss. I'm making her go anyway. Especially since trying to talk to her about supporting her sister meant nothing to her. I'm telling you guys, when these children get into their pre-teen years, it's like a whole new ball game. They have all these opinions and things to say. They get self-absorbed and everything becomes about them and their friends. Anyway, pictures will be posted after the
