Places in Philly: Philips Steaks

Everyone hyped up Geno's to be the best place (in Philadelphia) that you can get a cheese steak from. They're wrong. I love Philip's ♥. There are two windows at Philip's. They get so many orders for steaks, that the window on the right, is for ordering cheese steaks (& a few other sandwiches). The window to the left is for ordering corny things that you can get anywhere. So you get your fries, nuggets and things like that from that window. When you order your steak, you don't hold the line up with unnecessary words. You say, "Can I have one, with & whiz." or just, "One, with, whiz and American." The first means you want one cheese steak with onions and cheese whiz. Obviously, the 2nd, is adding American cheese. Don't ask for peppers on your sandwich, they'll charge you for that. Instead ask for a wrapper, and take advantage of the free peppers they have sat out with the condiments. Philip's is located in south Philadelphia off

Places in Philly: Smith Playground (South Philadelphia)

People in our neighborhood call this Smith Playground. (Not to be confused with Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse , which is located in Fairmount Park). Smith Playground, is a grassy open park in South Philadelphia. It sits across the street from Vare Middle School and down the street from the 1st District Police station. There is wide open space to run and aside from the spray paint on the slides and walls, it's not such a bad looking park. I've been going to this park since my oldest daughter was one (she's 14 now). The Public Swimming pool was replaced with a "sprayground" for cost & safety reasons back in 2005. If I remember correctly, the swings were removed the same year. The City has however, managed to keep a handful, of much appreciated programs alive for the community. The park is located at 2100 S. 24th Street in the 19145 zip code. The Recreation Department is open Monday thru Friday. Call 215-685-1898 for information on after school progr

Places In Philly: The Edgar Allan Poe House

The Edgar Allan Poe House is a National Historical Site located on 532 North Seventh Street in Philadelphia.  This is right off of 7th & Spring Garden. Admission is free.  I visited the Edgar Allan Poe house when they had the Grand Re-Opening on January of 2009.   If you don't know who Edgar Allan Poe is, Google him. Haha! Just kidding.  Edgar Allan Poe was a poet, writer & critic. He lived in the 1800s & this house was his home during his time in Philadelphia.  Poe was one of the first (well-known) Americans to try and live off of writing alone.  You know, like make a career out of it. "The Raven" is one of Poe's most famous poems and has become a favorite to many people including myself.  Outside of the Poe House there is a Raven statue (shown below). It is believed that Edgar lived in this house at around Age 23.  I was told that this entrance on the side of the house, was actually the main entrance back then. When Poe lived in Philadelphia, he lived
