How to Win the Lottery

Today, I ran across an article on the Huffington Post about 7 time lottery winner Richard Lustig. Back in November, Lustig was giving out tips on how to win the lottery, or at least, how to increase your chances of winning. This man has won the grand prize seven times, so either he is the luckiest man in the world, or he knows what he's talking about, (you be the judge).

Here are some of his tips:
- Pick your own numbers instead of having the machine do it for you
- Research and see if your numbers have won before
- Select your ten sets of numbers and keep those if you continue buying tickets
- Buy as many tickets as you can afford

Those tips sounded great, but I wondered, "What are the real chances of me winning the lottery even if I did those things?" I decided to find out.

In Pennsylvania, we have the Cash 5 Lottery Drawing. The odds of winning the Cash 5 are obviously better than the odds of winning the PowerBall or any lottery drawing with more than 5 numbers, but it still holds a high jackpot at times. So I went to www.webmath.com where they asked me a few simple questions in order to calculate my chances of winning.

Here is how they broke it down (click the image to enlarge):

As it turns out, there is a 1 in 962,598 chance that I will win the Cash 5 (if I decide to play it). Just for fun, Web Math gave me some other odds to compare this to. For example; there is about a 1 in 2,000,000 chance of being struck by lightning; a pregnant woman has a 1 in 705,000 chance of giving birth to quadruplets; and someone eating an oyster has a 1 in 12,000 chance of finding a pearl inside of it.

If you live in Pennsylvania and you plan to play the lottery, here are your chances of winning:
The Big 4: 1 in 126 chance
Cash 5: 1 in 962,598 chance
Match 6 Lotto: 1 in 13,983,816 chance
Mega Millions: 1 in 3,819,816 chance of picking the winning numbers on your top grid and 1 in 46 chance of getting the Mega Ball number correct.
Powerball: 1 in 5,006,386 chance of picking the winning numbers on your top grid and 1 in 35 chance of getting the Power Ball number correct.

Calculating the odds for winning The Daily Number and Quinto is a bit trickier since you have to calculate the chances of selecting the correct numbers and consider your Play Type and Bid. The PA Lottery has a thorough chart on your odds of winning at their website; palottery.state.pa.us

So, are you feeling lucky yet? :)

  3. Regardless of the odds I play play religiously. My motto has always been "You can't win, if you don't play!" So many people dream fo what they'd do with the money if they win but don't ever play. Really cool to see the breakdown of your math though, pretty interesting to view the odds. I can't believe someone has won the grand prize 7 times... I've maybe won a dollar 7 times, haha! I think the only question left for me when I win is lump sum or annuity payments?!

  4. Thanks for the comments everyone. I do play the lottery for fun. I don't play every day, but every now and then I try my luck :) You never know what could happen, right?

Week 29 - At The Beach

A Blog About Blogging -Someone Please Notice Me!

I've been spending some time joining social networks for Bloggers and checking out other blogs. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of people have a theme for their blog. The other thing that they have, that my blog doesn't have, is a header. I've seen so many pretty header images and catchy Blog titles. I'm wondering, "Is my blog missing something?" I chose not to use a header because I think it will clash with all the colors on my page and make everything look too busy. I chose not to stick to one theme because I have a million things to say and they come in a variety of different topics. I haven't been getting a lot of comments. So, I'm not sure if it has to do with the layout of my blog, or something else like that. I read somewhere online that for every 100 people that view your blog only 10 will comment. I can say that the social networks have paid off. Most of the comments that I received came from people who are members of those networks.

Week 28: Feet Week

Bratz Big Kidz Music Stars

I tried my hardest to catch these dollies on sale this year. I planned to buy four. One for each of the girls. But they were selling out like crazy. My daughters just love Brat dolls. I don't know why. They have big heads, they break much easier than Barbie and they seriously overdue it on make-up. I was happy when MGA came up with the Bratz Kidz Dolls. These dolls don't where as much make-up. What I liked most about these Big Kidz, is that they are NOT dressed in slutty clothes. Although Yasmin's outfit still shows a little tummy, it is much more appropriate than others I have seen on this brand of doll. So anyway, as I searched the net for the new Bratz Big Kidz Music Stars, I could not find Sasha anywhere. I found the Bratz Big Kidz Snap-On Doll Sasha (who's skirt is way too short), but I could not find the Music Stars doll. I checked everywhere I could think of, (in the US) and found nothing. However, while searching the net I found that many stores in the UK ha

Selecting New Eyeglasses (It's Never a Bad Idea to Consider the Price)

I accidentally threw away my glasses one night, (that's so me, I had put them in a plastic bag with some snacks). That was over a year ago and I just recently took on the challenge of selecting and purchasing new eyeglasses . This is a challenge to me, because I always have a difficult time selecting the best glasses for my face shape and skin tone. Honestly, I hate the way I look in any glasses and if I didn't need prescription glasses in order to operate a vehicle, I would go without them. (I do not recommend that anyone else do that, and I'm sure my optometrist would scold me). In order to prevent myself from getting another ticket, I had to take on the task of finding some glasses that I would feel comfortable and confident in. This time around I did some online research on how to pick out the perfect glasses . I watched some videos, read some articles, figured out my face shape, and then forgot almost everything as soon as I walked into the optical shop and saw

Thursday Thoughts

I guess there comes a time when every mother has to come face to face with their teenager and let them know who's boss. Mother/daughter relationships can be difficult during these years. This Thursday's Thought: "Mother Nature is providential. She gives us twelve years to develop a love for our children before turning them into teenagers." ~William Galvin The reason behind the thought: My daughter crossed a line last night. This line crossing showed blatant disrespect and has changed our relationship forever. My daughter turned 13 in March. It's only been a few months and one of my worst fears has already come true. The fear that she would one day forget how much I love her and how much I've been here for her through the years. I've never had a teenager before and this is all new to me, but one thing I am not going to do is play friends with her and allow her to disrespect me.
